Hey guys.
I'm just a simple girl who, up until a little while ago, had a spiffy (but gutless) Civic, and lived in the city. But here I am now, in a vehicle nearly as old as myself, itching to get lost in the woods on a weekendly basis.
I picked up an old XJ from an auction last May. Thing had some serious leaks, busted joints, no brakes, ugly rust spots...the list continues. 4x4 works, thank god.. not sure about the rest of her, haha.
I've no clue what I'm doing, or how to achieve what I want, or heck - if it's even possible with the Jeep I've got now. But if you tell me how, I'll do my best to get 'er done.
'92 Cherokee Limited.
A friend recommended this site to me, so here I am. Teach me your Jeeping ways.

Welcome!
There are a few guru's on here, so if your stuck we will have some opinions for sure.
If you don't have a mastercraft tool set from Canadian tire, I highly recommend getting one. Mine has served me very well.

jaiime, i guess the best way to start would be for you to let us know what you would like to do with your jeep and what your level of comfort would be with modifications and how much you are looking to spend? Most of the trails around here will involve mud of some degree. At the very least I would recommend a good set of tires and a winch. Beyond that, the sky is the limit. I used to have an old '88 XJ and it was a great little machine.......there are lots you can do with them. I know what I personally would to with an XJ, but that might differ from your vision.

I have no winch, but I have a well used tow rope. She's all stock, but I drive her like she's jacked up on aggressive tires.
I'm still rockin' the studs, lol.
Let me figure this site out, I'll upload some photos if I can, so you can see what I'm working with.
She's all stock at the moment, but I'd love to get her on 33's with maybe a 3" lift. My main concern is whether she's mechanically sound enough to bother with my time and money. I don't work at site, so I don't make the big bucks. My level of comfort in terms of MY hands on, is unlimited. However my knowledge? Haha, I can check my own oil and pump my own gas and tow out jacked up Ram's, I've done my own front brakes and changed out a rusted u-joint, and recently I learned how to do rust repairs... but that's it. But like I said, I'm more than willing to get a little dirty under that thing and learn and do as much as I physically can.
I can't tell you how much I want to spend, because I have no clue what things cost.. I just know I'd get more bang for my buck if I were anywhere other than Fort Mac, haha.

There are lots of ways to get what you want without spending a lot of money. Trust me, i did a LOT to mine without spending much. Do you know what kind of motor/transmission/transfer case and axles you have? 33's is a nice size tire for XJ's but they might not be do-able on a 3" lift. I had to lift mine about 4" and cut the fenders to fit 32's........but anything is possible with enough cutting. Also, a good website that I learned a lot from was www.naxja.org. Post up your pics and let us see what you have. I'll see if I can get mudjunkie to chime in here too since he has about 35 XJ's and is one of the cheapes bastards I know. I think he paid about $4 a piece for them.

Mudjunkie is definitely the cheapest guy around.......and knows a little about XJs. .....but Littletj was able to keep Ghetto Fabulous on the road for a long time..... ;D....I am sure if you ask nicely one of them could look at it.... ;D

I did some rust restoration this past weekend... Couldn't get at that one handle, as it busted off and I got lazy.. But yeah, anyone who wants to come take a look at it, I'll trade you time for BBQ'd dinner? Haha

I also only know the specs because Google's so smart.. haha
4.0L (242 CID) I6 MPI (High Output). Aisin-Warner AW-4 4-speed automatic. I've currently got 235/75/15R's on her, her tail pipe is left up on Tower Road somewhere, the rear main is leaking profusely, and one of the front ball joints are gone.. and have been for quite some time.

....and after being cut off by a Corolla today, there's even more wrong with her. Just my luck.
haha I might hit up Williams Chrysler tomorrow.

i wouldn't let anyone at Williams near my vehicle if I didn't have to. What happened to it? Looks like you've got a solid motor/trans combo. Rear main replacement is easy, just messy. Balljoints are pretty easy too. Some junkyard springs, a little fender trimmin' and a new set of rubber and you'll be in good shape.

What about the rear main issue, the new steering column issue, the missing tail pipe, the light knock in the engine....
lol
I was kidding about Chrysler. I cringe when I have to drop off our work trucks.

Nothing "happened", thats the thing. Some chick in a Corolla cut me off on the bridge after work.. I swerved sharply, and from then on the ride was rough as hell. The drivers side u-joint is sheared off, and the steering column/box sound like shit. I went right over to my friend's place, the one who told me about this site, and he told me to stop driving it

That sucks to hear.
I definitely wouldn't drive with a busted u-joint. You're liable to (if you haven't already) bust the ears on the axle shafts as well.
Steering could be any number of things.......hard to diagnose without seeing.
